Chinatown – Faye Dunaway & Roman Polanski
It’s no secret that director Roman Polanski and his leading lady Faye Dunaway absolutely hated each other while working on their classic neo-noir thriller Chinatown. In fact, one of the most infamous on-set stories of all time was born out of their explosive ongoing squabbles. Polanski said in retrospect that Dunaway was “very difficult” while they worked together, adding that the film nearly came to a halt due to their frequent arguing and repeated clashes. It was reported that Polanski once pulled one of Dunaway’s hairs out of her head because it was “catching the light” during a shot. More famously, when Polanski refused to allow bathroom breaks between multiple takes, Dunaway reportedly urinated into a cup and then proceeded to throw it at the director in a fit of rage. Somehow, they still managed to make an incredible film.
Batman Forever – Jim Carey & Tommy Lee Jones
Legendary comedian Jim Carey wasn’t laughing on the set of Batman Forever – not when he was filming scenes with Tommy Lee Jones, anyway. After some contentious days shooting, both actors happened to be at the same restaurant the day before a big scene. Carey says that he approached Jones and, as he told Howard Stern in 2014,“The blood drained from his face in such a way that I realized that I had become the face of his pain or something. And he got up, kind of shaking, and hugged me and said, ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you.’ And I was like, ‘Wow, okay, what’s going on, man?’ And he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery.’” This friction carried over to shooting, with the two never getting along despite sharing several critical scenes.
