Movies typically seem pretty harmless. After all, even though movies may contain profanity and graphic images, it is impossible for them to physically injure or kill a person (unless, of course, somebody uses a DVD as a weapon). When Elmer C. Sommerfield, aged forty-five, went to Jaws with his wife, he collapsed from a heart attack forty-five minutes into it. Two doctors in the audience tried to revive him, but he died on the way to the hospital.
The 1932 film Freaks was incredibly controversial for its time. It included circus midgets and a hermaphrodite among other types of people. One lady who attended a test screening blamed a subsequent miscarriage she suffered on the movie.
