Blackmail involves making a threat to harm someone unless he or she meets a specific set of demands. It is typically a traumatic experience for the individual who is being threatened or extorted. In some cases, however, it is the blackmailer who ends up suffering the most. Here are ten of the most outrageous blackmail plots that have ever made the news.
Even large Hollywood studios are not exempt from damaging blackmail plots. A Serbian man in his mid-twenties demanded that a Hollywood studio pay him $25,000 worth of Bitcoin, a form of online currency. He threatened to leak Steven Spielberg’s film The Boss Baby on the Internet well before its official release in American theatres if the studio failed to comply. Momcilo Dinovic, the blackmailer, received an initial sum of about $11,000 before being apprehended and arrested by police officers. Even today, it still remains unclear how he ended up with a copy of the film. Dinovic is now facing a possible twelve-year prison sentence if he is found guilty of extortion.
Taking On The Law
Nineteen-year-old waitress Georgia Harris was involved in an intense relationship with a police officer. After dating him for a while, she coerced the officer into a conversation about a hypothetical rape, all while secretly filming the chat. Harris then got to work editing the video, making it sound as if the officer was attempting to intimidate her into sexual intercourse. She threatened to release the tape unless he agreed to pay her $322. The cop reported Harris to the department in which he was employed. Upon her arrest, the waitress apologized for her behaviour in a letter, but she was still sentenced to eight months in jail for her actions.
