The Maldives is a small chain of islands which is located in the Indian Ocean, specifically, the Arabian Sea. The country lies southwest of Sri Lanka and India and was relatively unknown by tourists until the 1970s. When Venkata Giri left his hotel job in London to set up a resort on a desert island in the Maldives, he settled on the island of Maadhoo. When he moved to the island, Giri had no idea how long it would take and how much it would cost to develop. Check out this slideshow that shows how a USD 51 million investment transformed this barren island into a dream destination.
When Giri arrived on the island, it was no more than a spit of sand, but he saw the potential of Maadhoo and his vision had come together nicely. This island, one of the 1,200 in the Maldives, is a forty minute boat ride from the capital city of the country, Male. Many of the pictures featured in this slideshow were taken by Giri himself.
