10 Brilliant Solutions To Organize Your Closet

February 6, 2017

One of the most frustrating things in life can be avoided with some simple organization tips and tools. A disorganized or cluttered closet space can add unnecessary time and stress to an already busy lifestyle, but when you have everything in its place, it is a breeze to maintain order. By having regularly-used items highly visible, they will be readily available, while out-of-season clothing can be hidden away and out of sight with storage bins and bags. The following list contains a few ideas you can use to add more efficiency to your day.

Shower Curtain Rings

From the shower to the closet, shower curtain rings are a great bedroom hack when it comes to storing summer tank tops, purses jewellery and even scarves. This inexpensive tip can be done by simply using plastic rings from the dollar store and securing them to a clothes hanger. Depending how thick the rings are, one hanger can hold up to twenty-five tanks when they are hung by the shoulder straps. With this method, shirts are visible without being crammed in a drawer and are easy to remove and rehang. Get extra creative and arrange them by color.

PVC Pipe

PVC pipe can be used for more than just plumbing and drainage needs. When cut to size, the tubes can be used to store scarves and ties, shoes, school supplies, and more. PVC is durable, stable, and will likely last the lifetime of your storage requirements. It can be cut to size using a hacksaw, a pipe cutter, or a miter saw. First, measure the height of your drawer and cut as much pipe as needed, or to line up with the top of the drawer. When scarves and ties are rolled to fit inside the tubes, they will be stored with minimal wrinkles and will be easy to spot. Scarves can be arranged by seasonal use.

Recycled Soda Can Tabs

Double coat hangers are the ideal solution to keeping suits or matching outfits together and help spread them out slightly, so they are easy to find. If you do not want to purchase the specialty hangers, make your own by reusing old tabs before your cans hit the recycle bin. Put one of the tab’s holes through the top of one hanger and then slide the second hanger through the hole that will be at the bottom. Clothes can be paired with your favorite tops and bottoms, by color, or by each of your daily outfits for the week.

Storing Boots

An excellent way to keep boots upright, uncrushed, and in an organized fashion is to use pool noodles. They can be purchased inexpensively at dollar stores and will add to the lifetime of your favorite boots. Cut them to size and simply place inside to keep them standing up straight and prevent them from losing their shape. Make sure your boots are dry before inserting the noodles to prevent damage to the material.

Shortcut For Shorts

In the heat of the summer, the last thing you want to be doing is digging through cluttered drawers looking for your favorite pair of shorts. Have them all handy in the closet where they are visible. Using shower rings, loop them through the belt bucket of your shorts and hang them in line on the clothing rod. This works perfect for jean shorts and to keep similar length and colors of shorts together. This allows them to line up close together without taking up a lot of extra space.

Linens

There is nothing more frustrating than an unsightly and unorganized linen closet. How many times have you searched for a matching pillow case to a set of sheets? Use that pillow case for storing the fitted and top sheet, as well as the second pillow case. Use separate piles for the various sheet sizes or those for the kid’s rooms. You can do the same with sets of towels and face clothes, except using a wire or see-through plastic bin or a stack of shelves set apart just high enough to put them in and out with ease.

Box Your Socks

Small boxes, such as the ones ornaments come in during the holidays, are perfect for storing pairs of socks. They can be lined up side-by-side or in a grid fashion and hold one or two pairs of socks each, depending on the size. They can be stored by color, pattern, or style and are easy to spot quickly. You will know where to return each pair because an empty box will remain next to a similar set of socks. Tall liquor boxes are useful for long, heavy, winter socks.

Install A Pegboard

Do you have a drawer full of tangled necklaces, belts, and other accessories? Mount a pegboard and use hooks to hang all of those things that cause unnecessary mess and clutter. If you put the pegboard on the inside of the closet door, it will be out of sight to maintain a clean look to your room. Put a mirror up beside it, and you can find the perfect accessory to go with the outfit you are pulling out at the same time. The hooks are also practical for hanging sunglasses, purses, and lanyards.

Storing Unused Items

Whether they are out-of-season pieces or items you are saving as hand-me-downs to a younger child, you will want to keep them out of sight and out of the way. One good storage option for winter wear in the summer, or vice versa, is a duvet bag. The large, clear case is the perfect shape to hold folded clothing and usually has a flat bottom and zipper. The bonus is that you can see what is inside without having to open it or take it down from a top shelf. The other option is to box them up in either clear or sturdy canvas boxes, labeled with all the contents.

Categorize

If you are lucky enough to have a walk-in closet, the task of categorizing items is much easier. Separate your storage area with shelves, shoe racks, and hangers to group clothing according to the category. Casual items can be separated from work suits to quickly choose outfits based on occasion or sort by color for quick pairing. A different rod can be used to hang non-clothing items like purses and scarves. If you do not have a walk-in closet, similar solutions can be done using a hanging shoe bag for scarves or socks, bins for underwear or leggings, and top shelves to arrange tops by color.
