Tyson was recruited by Carl Sagan in high school when he was applying to colleges. Sagan was a faculty member at Cornell University, and when Tyson was accepted but considering his options, he received an interesting letter from the professor trying to convince him to attend Cornell, including an invitation for Tyson to visit the astronomy lab for a tour. Tyson gleefully accepted and traveled by bus to meet him in Ithaca, New York. After meeting Sagan and receiving a signed book with the message: "To Neil, future astronomer," Tyson received a ride back to the bus station and an offer to stay with Sagan's family in case the bus didn't show. However, Tyson chose Harvard instead as it contained a larger astronomy department and an observatory.
