The Emperor of All Maladies By Siddhartha Mukherjee
The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee is subtitled ‘A Biography of Cancer.’ As such, it traces the history of cancer from its first documented appearances several thousand years ago. In one chapter, Mukherjee tells of Atossa (550 to 475 BC), the Queen of Persia. She developed breast cancer and is believed to eventually have had a slave cut off the affected breast. Mukherjee also describes the research and various cures attempted over the centuries. Siddhartha Mukherjee, born in 1970 in New Delhi, India, is an oncologist and physician, whose research concentrates on stem cells, especially those that exist in bone marrow and form blood cells. Mukherjee has found several genes and chemicals that affect both normal stem cells and cancer cells.
