Co-Discovered The Four Laws Of Black Hole Mechanics
Working in collaboration with James Bardeen and Brandon Carter, Hawking co-discovered the four laws of black hole mechanics in 1970. Similar to the four laws of thermodynamics used in both physics and chemistry, these seek to explain the physical properties of black holes to predict their formation and actions better. In fact, the four laws of black hole mechanics closely mirror the four laws of thermodynamics, including the concepts of conservation of mass and energy. These black hole mechanics laws are now ubiquitously accepted in the physics and astrophysics community. In January 1971, Hawking’s essay presenting the four laws won him the Gravity Research Foundation Award.
