Magnets Have North and South Poles, But Why?

As children, we all enjoyed playing with the magical devices that are magnets. Hours of entertainment could be had pushing and pulling magnets along a surface without ever touching. Furthermore, if you cut a small piece off of a magnet, the resulting portion retains these properties. While science knows some of why this occurs, it still can not explain why all magnets have north and south poles.
