Scientists know it exists and can even control it in studies, but the exact way that the placebo effect works in the mind remains largely a mystery. When given controlled doses of substances labeled as a particular medication, a significant portion of the population will report feeling the effects regardless of whether the medication was real or not. Is this a case of mind over body? Science still just does not know.
