Everyone consumes at least some processed food. This type of food, after all, makes life more convenient. Thus, individuals with busy lifestyles have options. Unfortunately, though, processed meat is also a serious cause of asthma attacks and other symptoms. This is especially the case with cured and processed meat. The reason processed food can cause flare-ups of asthma symptoms is that they contain chemical preservatives, as well as artificial flavors, colors, and sweeteners.

Sulfites are a common preservative, and as mentioned, they are also common triggers for asthma. Processed meats such as hot dogs often contain nitrates, which are compounds used as preservatives. They help maintain freshness as well as color. However, there is a strong link between nitrates in processed meat and increased symptoms of asthma, including inflammation in the lungs.
